Phone Novel Update #2

Well I started writing a novel on my phone the other day and I already know I probably wont have the time to finish it. This is because I’ve got so many other things going on that are just more important at the moment.

But I promised I’d give it a go and see what it was like so I sat down and wrote the first thing that came into my head. I ended up writing over about three days on and off. So I’ll just talk about the good and the bad.

Review

I have to say that overall this was a really great experience. I started it just so I could write about it for this post but really I found myself wanting to sit down and write on my phone.

The typing started off a little difficult, but that’s only because it’s a medium I’m not used to, in fact writing this post now is a little odd because I haven’t written on a computer in a week. I could write about 300-400 words in 20mins once I got in the flow, though the problem I found was that if I got too ‘flowy’ then it screwed up my typing and I ended up with “et’ he’ e et” and then had to go back and fix it.

Mistakes in the writing was my biggest peeve. At the start I kept going to write ‘place’ and my finger would always miss the ‘p’ and hit ‘l’ and I’d keep writing ‘loafers’ in predictive text. I didn’t notice this until I was 500 words in and realised I had to go back and change it all. Then there are times that the word is different and I struggle to remember the word I was actually meant to write.

I do love that I can just sit anywhere I want and type away, straight away. I actually found myself more inspired to write on my phone then to get a notepad or turn my computer on. It’s just there and ready to use, which I do love.

And you really don’t realise how much you’ve written, I mean it tells you the word count in the app I’m using ‘My Writing Spot’, but I sent the writing to my email to have a back up copy and when I was looking at it (by now it about 1300ish words), I was so amazed that I’d written that much because it looked so little on the screen.

Writing prose I’ve said in the previous Phone Novel post was easy and this time I got to work on the dialogue and really it’s just as easy. It feels to natural to press ALT to get the symbols. To be honest I was worried it was going to be a pain, but no, quite easy and enjoyable.

I really can see myself writing on my phone. I’ve been doing it more and more since I bought it. There are of course things that still need to be improved, but most of it has to do with the keyboard and predictive text.

I said at the start of this post that I knew I wasn’t going to have time to write a whole novel on my phone, but really I still want to try, even if I just use it as a way to get myself writing when I’m stuck in a rut. I really enjoy writing on my phone and encourage others to give it a go to.
